Who is enrolled in the Adult Literacy Project?
Students who are 18 years or older, who are not enrolled in any other school or literacy program, are English-speaking adults who read below a fifth grade level.
Is there a charge for the program?
No, the tutoring lessons are free to those who qualify. Our tutors are volunteers and the library provides materials.
Can ESOL (English as a Second Language) students enroll in the
program?
ESOL students must display sufficient conversational English skills to understand instruction. In a telephone interview, one of our staff members will assess the student for
qualifications.
What if an ESOL student reads above the fifth grade level?
Individuals are referred to other local Adult Education facilities that offer higher-level grammar and composition instruction.
How does a student get a tutor?
The student calls the Literacy Office for a telephone interview and schedules an appointment to meet with a volunteer for placement and orientation.
How does a volunteer become a tutor?
A prospective tutor can apply online and a LVCC staff member will contact the volunteer with additional information about our program and upcoming workshops.
Do you need experience to become a reading tutor?
Volunteers do not need teaching experience to be tutor. No prior experience is necessary.
What is required of a volunteer?
Volunteers must complete the free Tutor Training Workshops. Workshops are scheduled multiple times throughout the year for six consecutive Wednesdays at the Camden County, Voorhees, Vogelson
Library from 1:00 – 3:30 p.m.
How often must a tutor meet a student?
The tutor should be able to commit to meet a student for at least two hours a week.
Where do tutors and students
meet?
Lessons can take place in any Camden County Library locations or other mutually agreed public location.
